Colonel Alexander Montgomery (1667 – 25 March 1722) was an important Irish soldier and politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Monaghan. This means he was chosen by people to represent them in the Irish Parliament.

Who Was Alexander Montgomery?
Alexander Montgomery was born in 1667 in Ballyleck, Monaghan, Ireland. His father was Major John Montgomery. Alexander decided to join the British Army.
His Military Career
He quickly moved up the ranks in the army. In 1689, he became a captain in the Inniskilling Dragoons. Later, he was promoted to major in 1704. By 1706, he became a lieutenant colonel. He also served as a captain in the Monaghan Militia in 1708.
His Political Role
Alexander Montgomery was also involved in politics. In 1718, he was chosen as the High Sheriff of County Monaghan. A High Sheriff was a very important local official. They were in charge of keeping the peace and making sure laws were followed.
From 1713 to 1722, he served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Monaghan. As an MP, he represented the people of his county in the Irish Parliament.
His Family and Home
Alexander Montgomery married Elizabeth Cole. She was the daughter of Thomas Cole. Elizabeth brought the Ballyleck estate in County Monaghan as part of her marriage. Colonel Montgomery then made Ballyleck his home. This is how his family line, the Montgomerys of Ballyleck, began.
Alexander and Elizabeth had seven children:

- John Montgomery, who became an MP and High Sheriff for County Monaghan.
- Matthew Montgomery, who sadly died young.

His Later Life
Alexander Montgomery passed away on March 25, 1722. In his will, he decided to leave his home, Ballyleck, to his second son, John. He did this instead of leaving it to his eldest son, Thomas.
The Montgomery Manuscripts
A book called "The Montgomery Manuscripts," written in 1704, mentions Alexander. It says he was the grandson of Reverend Alexander Montgomery. The book also notes that Alexander was a captain and then a major in the army. It mentions he married Captain Cole's daughter and lived near Monaghan town. The book describes him as having a good estate and being a successful person.
