Thomas Montgomery was born in 1700. His father was Colonel Alexander Montgomery, who was also a politician, serving as a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Monaghan. His mother was Elizabeth Cole. Thomas grew up in Ballyleck, which is in County Monaghan, Ireland.

Political Career

Thomas Montgomery became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1729. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the government, helping to make laws and decisions. He represented the area of Lifford, in County Donegal. He served as an MP for a long time, until his death in April 1761, when he was 61 years old.

Family Life

Thomas Montgomery married an Englishwoman named Mary Franklin. She passed away in April 1758. His father did not approve of this marriage, and because of it, Thomas was disinherited, meaning he did not receive his father's inheritance.

Thomas and Mary had several children:

  • Richard Montgomery: He became a famous hero in the American Revolutionary War. He was also a former officer in the British Army.
  • Alexander Montgomery: Like his father, he became a Member of Parliament for County Donegal in 1768. He was also an officer in the British Army.
  • John Montgomery: He was a merchant, which means he bought and sold goods, in Lisbon, Portugal.
