Early Political Career
Alexander Sammurtok first ran for election in 2013. This was for the 2013 Nunavut general election. He wanted to represent the area called Rankin Inlet South. In that election, he tied with another candidate, Lorne Kusugak. A tie means both candidates got the exact same number of votes.
Because of the tie, a special election was held. This is called a by-election. Alexander Sammurtok won this by-election on February 10, 2014. This made him the MLA for Rankin Inlet South. He served in this role until September 24, 2017.

He won this election on November 19, 2021. He defeated Cathy Towtongie to become the MLA for this district. As of July 2025, he continues to serve in this important role.
Nunavut has a special type of government. It is called a consensus government. This means there are no political parties like in other parts of Canada. Instead, MLAs work together to make decisions. They try to reach an agreement that everyone can support.
