Who is Tom Sammurtok?
Tom Sammurtok was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in 2013. The Legislative Assembly is like a parliament for the territory of Nunavut. It's where elected representatives, called Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), meet to discuss laws and important issues for the people of Nunavut.
Representing Rankin Inlet
From 2013 to 2017, Tom Sammurtok represented the area called Rankin Inlet North-Chesterfield Inlet. This means he was the voice for the people living in that part of Nunavut. He worked to bring their concerns and ideas to the Legislative Assembly.
After 2017
In 2017, another election was held. Tom Sammurtok was not re-elected, and Cathy Towtongie became the new MLA for the area.
Family Connections
Tom Sammurtok is also the uncle of Alexander Sammurtok. Alexander was elected as an MLA for a nearby area, Rankin Inlet South, in 2014. It's interesting that two members of the same family have served in the Legislative Assembly!
