Alexander Stanhope (1638 – 20 September 1707) was an important English diplomat. He lived from 1638 to 1707. He worked as an envoy, or representative, in Madrid, Spain. This was from 1690 to 1699.

Early Life and Family

Alexander Stanhope was born in 1638. He was the youngest son of Philip Stanhope, 1st Earl of Chesterfield. His mother was Anne Pakington. Alexander went to Exeter College, Oxford University. He finished his studies there in 1654.

He married Catherine Burghill. They had several children together, including:

  • James Stanhope, 1st Earl Stanhope (born 1674 – died 1721)
  • Philip Stanhope (died 1708), who was a Captain in the Royal Navy.
  • Edward Stanhope (died 1711), who was a Colonel in the British Army.
  • Mary Stanhope (born around 1686 – died 1762)

His son, James Stanhope, became a very famous General. Some people even consider James Stanhope to be the first Prime Minister of Great Britain. He served in this role between 1717 and 1721.

Alexander Stanhope's Career

Alexander Stanhope had an important career in public service. He was a Gentleman Usher to the Queen. This meant he had a special role helping the Queen.

He also served as an Envoy Extraordinary to Spain. This was from 1689 to 1706. An envoy is like a special ambassador. They represent their country in another nation. He also worked as an Envoy to the States-General. This was the government of the Netherlands at the time.

In May 1663, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society. The Royal Society is a very old and respected group of scientists. Being a Fellow means you are recognized for your contributions to knowledge.
