Sir Alexander Menzies: A Scottish Knight
A Knight's Beginning
Alexander was the son of Sir Robert de Meyners. His father passed away in 1267. In the year 1282, a powerful lord named Sir John of Strathbogie, who was the Earl of Atholl, gave Alexander some land. These lands were called Weem and Aberfeldy. This made Alexander an even more important knight.
Captured in Battle
Scotland faced many challenges during Alexander's time. In 1296, a big battle happened at Dunbar. Alexander was captured there on April 27, 1296. He was taken as a prisoner to the Tower of London in England. He stayed there for over a year. Luckily, he was set free in August 1297.
Gifts from the King
Later, King Robert I of Scotland, also known as Robert the Bruce, gave Alexander more land. These new lands were called Durisdeer and the barony of Glendochar. This shows how much King Robert I trusted and valued Alexander.
