Alexander de St Martin was an important noble who lived in both England and Scotland. He was known as the Lord of Athelstaneford and also served as the Sheriff of Haddington.
Life of Alexander de St Martin
Alexander de St Martin received land from King David I of Scotland in 1153. These lands included Athelstaneford. He might have been part of the group of people who traveled with Ada de Warenne, who was King David I's wife.
Ada de Warenne also gave Alexander more lands. These included Alstanesford, Duncanlaw, and Baro. Alexander later gave some of his own land to religious groups. He gave land in St. Martinsgate to the Cistercian nunnery of St. Mary. He also gave land called Crumwelstrother to the Abbey of Neubotle.
Alexander was also a sheriff. A sheriff was an important official who managed an area for the king. He was the sheriff of Haddington in 1184. Alexander had two brothers, named Aldorf and Gilbert.
