About Alexandria, Ohio

Alexandria is a quiet spot in Scioto County. Even though it doesn't have its own mayor or city council, it's still a recognized place on the map. People live and work there, just like in any other community.

A Look Back: History

Alexandria was officially planned out and marked on a map in 1799. This process is called "platting." When a town is platted, its streets, lots, and public areas are all laid out.

There are a couple of ideas about how Alexandria got its name. It might have been named after Alexandria, Virginia, a famous city on the East Coast. Another possibility is that it was named after Alexander Parker. He was the brother of one of the very first settlers who came to live in the area.

A post office was set up in Alexandria in 1805. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. However, the post office eventually closed down. One record suggests it might have closed as early as 1808.
