Alexis Ord, also known as Lecki Ord, is an important Australian figure. She was the Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 1987 to 1988. This was a big deal because she was the very first woman to hold that important job! Lecki Ord has also been part of many groups that work to improve the community. These include the Friends of the ABC, a group that supports public broadcasting. She also helped start the Women's Planning Network and was active in the environmental movement.
What Did Alexis Ord Do?
Alexis Ord trained to be an architect. Architects are people who design buildings. She was very interested in how cities are planned and in keeping our environment healthy. This is called environmental sustainability. It means using resources wisely so they last for future generations.
Her Interest in Planning
Even when she was studying architecture, her passion for planning was clear. Her own house in Carlton, a suburb of Melbourne, became a key example. It was used to inspire discussions at a big student conference in 1964. This conference brought together students from architecture schools all over Australia and New Zealand. It showed how much she cared about good design and planning for communities.
