Alfons Borrell's Life Story
Alfons Borrell was born in Barcelona, Spain, in 1931. When he was nine years old, his family moved to a town called Sabadell.
In 1950, he finished his military service in Port de Pollença, Mallorca. There, he learned a lot at the art workshop of Hermen Anglada Camarasa.
Becoming an Artist
After returning to Sabadell in 1952, Alfons worked in his family's jewelry shop. He also took free drawing classes in Barcelona. In 1953, he met Rosa, who later became his wife.
By 1955, Borrell started to change his art style. He moved from drawing things that looked real (figurative art) to creating abstract paintings. In the same year, he helped start an art gallery in Sabadell called Sala d'Art Actual. He also helped create the Academy of Fine Arts of Sabadell.
Working with Other Artists
In 1957, Alfons worked on a magazine called Riutort. In 1959, he met Juan-Eduardo Cirlot, an important art writer. Alfons later wrote about Cirlot's ideas.
In 1969, Alfons joined a group of artists called Grup Gallot. They were interested in a style called action Painting. This meant they would create art in public places, like streets, in Sabadell and Barcelona.
Alfons Borrell was invited to show his art at the first Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art. He was married to Rosa for many years, and they had three children. Alfons Borrell passed away on October 6, 2020, when he was 89 years old.
