Exploring Port de Pollença
Port de Pollença is the most northern town in Majorca. It has several main areas, each with its own charm. These areas include the Pine Walk, Boquer, Central, Siller, Pinaret, Llenaire, and Gotmar. The beautiful Boquer Valley stretches northeast from the town. Near this valley, you can find the ruins of an ancient city called Bocchoris. This was one of the oldest settlements on the island!
The Pine Walk
The Pine Walk is a very popular path right along the coast. It faces a calm part of the larger Bay of Pollença. As you walk along, you'll see a bronze statue of the artist Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa. Close to the end of the Pine Walk is an old military base. This base is home to special planes used for fighting fires. These planes, often Canadair CL-415 models, can sometimes be seen practicing over the bay. The base also serves as a holiday spot for military members from countries in NATO.
Town Center
The main square in Port de Pollença is called Plaça Miguel Capllonch. It is named after the famous pianist and composer Miquel Capllonch Rotger, whose bronze statue is also there. This lively square is surrounded by many restaurants, shops, and bars. The Church of Our Lady of Carmen stands to the west of the square. Every Wednesday, the square becomes a busy market. Traders sell fresh fruit, fish, clothes, and handmade crafts.
Southern Areas
To the south of the town, there's a large, older neighborhood. It includes three areas: Urban El Pinaret, Urban Gotmar, and Urban Llenaire. This part of town has mostly apartments, small hotels, and private homes. It has grown slowly over many years. The beach in this area is perfect for families. The water is shallow, making it safe for swimming. You can also enjoy water sports or take a walk or bike ride along the wide promenade.
Art and Famous Visitors
Many artists and famous people have visited or lived in Port de Pollença. Painters like the Argentinian Atilio Boveri and Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa lived here. They helped make the place well-known. You can see some of Atilio Boveri's paintings at the Museum of Pollença.
Famous writers have also found inspiration here. Rubén Darío visited in the early 1900s and wrote poems about the island. The poet Miquel Costa i Llobera wrote several poems about the landscapes of Pollença and Formentor. More recently, the Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa, who won the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature, stayed at the Hotel Formentor. This hotel is also featured in Màxim Huerta's 2018 novel, "Firmamento."
The famous mystery writer Agatha Christie visited the town in the early 20th century. She stayed at a hotel on the Pine Walk. She described it in her book, "Problem at Pollensa Bay and Other Stories":
"... a small hotel standing on the edge of the sea looking out over a view that in the misty haze of a fine morning had the exquisite vagueness of a Japanese print."
An Argentine singer named Marilina Ross wrote a song called "Puerto Pollensa." It became very popular in 1982 when Sandra Mihanovich sang it. The song tells a story of love that Ross experienced on the beaches of Port de Pollença.
