Cap de Formentor facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cap de Formentor is the very northern tip of Mallorca, a beautiful island in Spain. It's part of the Formentor peninsula, a stunning area known for its tall cliffs and amazing views. People often call this cape the "Meeting point of the winds" because of the strong breezes that blow there.

Where is Cap de Formentor?

Cap de Formentor is located on the northernmost point of the Balearic Island of Mallorca in Spain. Its highest point, called Fumart, reaches 384 meters (about 1,260 feet) above the sea. The area has many pretty bays, like Cala Figuera, Cala Murta, and Cala Pi de la Posada.

A Look Back in Time

The Formentor Lighthouse

In 1863, the Formentor Lighthouse was opened. Building this lighthouse was very hard because the location on Cap de Formentor is so remote and rugged. Workers could only reach it by boat from the sea or by a long path that mules used.

The Famous Road

The 13.5-kilometer (about 8.4-mile) road that goes from Port de Pollença to Cap de Formentor was built by a Mallorcan engineer named Antonio Parietti in 1925. He also designed the famous "snake road" that leads to Sa Calobra. Like many mountain roads, it has to wind back and forth when the slope is too steep.

Hotel Formentor's Beginning

A famous Mallorcan poet, Miquel Costa i Llobera, once owned the Cap de Formentor peninsula. He wrote a well-known poem called The Pine of Formentor. After he passed away, the land was divided and sold. In 1928, an art lover from Argentina named Adan Diehl decided to build the Hotel Formentor there.

What to See and Do

Amazing Viewpoints

The headland has several great spots to stop and enjoy the view. One popular place is Mirador del Mal Pas, also known as Mirador d'es Colomer. From here, you can see the small island called Colomer. The views from this point are incredible! You can see the island of Menorca to the east, Cala Figuera to the west, and the sandy beach of Alcudia to the south. Just be careful if you don't like heights, as the sea is about 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet) below, and the winds can be very strong.

The Sea Cave

In the southeastern part of the cape, near Racó de Xot, there's a cool cave that opens up to the sea. It has two entrances, which are about 8 meters (26 feet) above the water. The cave is 90 meters (295 feet) long and 8 meters (26 feet) high. It's an important place for learning about the ancient talaiot culture that lived here long ago.
