Talaiot facts for kids
A talaiot is a very old stone building found on the Spanish islands of Menorca and Majorca. These buildings were made by the Talaiotic Culture during the Bronze Age. They were built a long, long time ago, between about 2000 BC and 1000 BC.
There are at least 274 talaiots. You can find them in or near ancient villages and special burial places called navetas. Talaiots are older than other big stone structures called taulas, which are often found close by.
People think some talaiots were used for defense, like watchtowers. On Menorca, they might have formed a network for signaling. Other talaiots might have been homes or meeting places. They are usually round or square. The talaiots on Menorca are in better condition than those on Majorca. However, not many valuable items have been found inside the Menorcan talaiots. This makes historians think Menorca might have been less wealthy than Majorca back then.
The first person to write about these amazing structures was Juan Ramis. He wrote about them in his book Celtic antiquities on the island of Menorca in 1818. This was the first book in Spanish completely about prehistory.
You can find similar large stone buildings in other parts of the Western Mediterranean Sea. These include the "nuraghes" in Sardinia, the "torri" in Corsica, and the "sesi" on the island of Pantelleria.

Recent Discoveries
Archaeologists are still learning new things about the Talaiotic Culture. In 2019, a very old sword was found at the Talaiot del Serral de ses Abelles. This site is in the Puigpunyent area of western Majorca. The sword is 3,200 years old and was made during the Bronze Age.
Archaeologists Jaume Deya and Pablo Galera led the team that found it. They believe the sword was made when the Talaiotic culture was starting to decline. This important discovery will be shown at the Majorca Museum.
