Llucmajor (Catalan pronunciation: [ʎuɡməˈʒo, ʎumːəˈʒo]; Spanish: Lluchmayor) is a large town and area on the island of Mallorca. Mallorca is one of the Balearic Islands in Spain. Llucmajor is special because it's the biggest municipality (which means a local government area) on Mallorca by land size.
Within the Llucmajor area, there are many smaller towns and villages. These include the main town of Llucmajor itself, and popular coastal spots like s'Arenal, Cala Blava, and Cala Pi.
About the Town of Llucmajor
The town of Llucmajor is the main center of the whole municipality. It has about 9,312 people living there. The town is located about 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) southeast of Palma Airport. It sits near the Puig de Randa mountain.
Because Llucmajor town is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the coast, it's not mainly a tourist beach spot. It has a different feel compared to the busy coastal resorts.
Llucmajor's History
The first church in Llucmajor was built a very long time ago, in 1259. In 1300, it was officially made a "villa" (a type of town) by James II of Majorca.
A very important event in the town's history was the Battle of Llucmajor in 1349. In this battle, Peter IV of Aragon won against his cousin, James III of Majorca. This battle ended the independent Kingdom of Majorca. King James III was killed on the battlefield near the town. He was first buried in the town's church, but now his grave is in the main cathedral in Palma.
Later, in 1543, a ruler named Charles V gave Llucmajor the right to hold a market twice a week, on Wednesdays and Fridays. This helped the town's economy.
In the 1900s, Llucmajor grew into an important industrial area. It became well-known for making shoes, which brought wealth to the town.
Economy and Jobs
Llucmajor town is a strong manufacturing center. It is especially famous for making shoes. Besides shoemaking, the town's economy also depends on tourism, especially in its coastal areas.
A large airline company called Air Europa has its main office in Llucmajor.
