The Formentor Lighthouse (also known as Far de Formentor in Spanish) is an active lighthouse located on the Spanish island of Majorca. It stands proudly at the very tip of Cap de Formentor, a stunning and rugged peninsula.
This lighthouse is special because it's the highest one in the Balearic Islands. Its light shines from an amazing 210 metres (690 ft) above the sea. This high position helps ships see its light from far away, guiding them safely along the coast.

What is a Lighthouse?
A lighthouse is like a giant flashlight for ships. It sends out a bright light to help sailors find their way. Lighthouses warn ships about dangerous coastlines, rocks, or shallow waters. They also guide ships into safe harbors.
Lighthouses have been important for centuries. Before modern navigation tools, they were often the only way for ships to know where they were.
Location and Amazing Views
The Formentor Lighthouse is built on high, dramatic cliffs. These cliffs are part of the Cap de Formentor peninsula. This area is famous for its breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.
Visitors often travel to this spot to see the lighthouse and enjoy the incredible scenery. The road leading to the lighthouse is winding and offers spectacular sights.
Building the Lighthouse
The Formentor Lighthouse was built a long time ago, in 1863. Building a lighthouse in such a remote and high place was a huge challenge. Workers had to bring all the materials up the steep cliffs.
They used strong masonry (stone and brickwork) to construct the tower. The lighthouse has a cylindrical shape with two balconies and a lantern room at the top. Its white tower and buildings stand out against the grey lantern.
How the Lighthouse Works
The lighthouse stands 22 metres (72 ft) tall. Its light can be seen from about 24 nautical miles (44 km; 28 mi) (nautical miles) away. This is a very long distance, showing how powerful its light is.
Today, many lighthouses are automated. This means they work by themselves, without a keeper living there all the time. The Formentor Lighthouse helps guide ships day and night, ensuring their safety as they sail near Majorca.
