Alfonso Falero Folgoso is a Spanish expert who studies Japan and its culture. He was born in Granada, Spain, in 1959. He knows a lot about the history of Japanese ideas and the Shintō religion.
Alfonso Falero's Life Story
Alfonso Falero earned his first college degree, called a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in Philosophy from the University of Granada in Spain in 1981.
He then moved to Japan and lived there from 1984 to 1986, working in various jobs. After a short time back in Europe, he returned to Japan. From 1990 to 1998, he focused on his studies. He learned the Japanese language at Ōsaka Foreign Studies University. Later, he studied the Shintō religion at Tokyo's Kokugakuin University. This university is very famous for studying Japanese classical subjects.
At Kokugakuin University, he earned a Ph.D. degree, which is a very high academic degree. His main research paper, called a dissertation, was written in Japanese. It was titled The Christian and Shintō Idea of Sin (“tsumi”); a Comparative Approach. He was the first person from another country to get this kind of degree in this field from a Japanese university. His main teacher was Professor Kenji Ueda, who was a leading expert in Shintō studies at that time.
When he came back to Spain, he started and became the head of the Oriental Studies Section at the University of Salamanca. This is one of only three universities in Spain where students can earn a master's degree in this field.
