Alfonso Falero Folgoso is a Spanish expert on Japan, known as a japanologist. He was born in Granada, Spain, in 1959. He is especially good at understanding the history of Japanese ideas and the Shintō religion.

Alfonso Falero's Early Life and Studies
Alfonso Falero studied Philosophy at the University of Granada in Spain, finishing in 1981. After that, he moved to Japan and lived there from 1984 to 1986, working in different jobs.
He later returned to Japan between 1990 and 1998. During this time, he learned the Japanese language at Ōsaka Foreign Studies University. Then, he studied Shintō at Tokyo's Kokugakuin University. This university is very famous for studying Japanese history and culture.
Becoming a Shintō Expert
At Kokugakuin University, Alfonso Falero earned a Ph.D. degree. His special paper was written in Japanese and compared the ideas of sin in Christianity and Shintō. He was the first person from another country to get this degree in this field at a Japanese university. His teacher was Kenji Ueda, a very respected expert on Shintō studies.
When he came back to Spain, he started and led the Oriental Studies Section at the University of Salamanca. This is one of only three universities in Spain where you can get a master's degree in this field.

At the University of Salamanca, Alfonso Falero focuses on several important areas:
