Alfonso Laso Sedeño (died 1607) was an important leader in the Catholic Church during the late 1500s and early 1600s. He served as a bishop and later an archbishop in different parts of Spain and Italy. He was known for his work in the church until his death in 1607.

Alfonso Laso Sedeño's Journey in the Church

Alfonso Laso Sedeño became a bishop on 12 October 1587. This happened during the time when Pope Sixtus V was the head of the Catholic Church. His first role was as the Bishop of Gaeta, a city in Italy.

A few months later, on 7 February 1588, he was officially consecrated as a bishop. This important ceremony was led by Enrico Caetani, a high-ranking cardinal. Two other bishops, José Esteve Juan and Cristóbal Senmanat y Robuster, also helped with the ceremony.

In 1596, Alfonso Laso Sedeño was given a new role. On 7 February, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Cagliari. This appointment was made by Pope Clement VIII, who had become the new Pope.

Later, on 1 December 1604, Pope Clement VIII appointed him again. This time, he became the Archbishop (Personal Title) of Mallorca. Mallorca is a large island in Spain. He continued to serve in this important position until he passed away on 21 August 1607.

Helping Other Bishops

During his time as a bishop, Alfonso Laso Sedeño also played a role in helping other church leaders become bishops.

  • He was the main person who consecrated Francisco Esquivel as the Archbishop of Cagliari in 1605. This means he led the ceremony that made Esquivel a bishop.
  • He also helped consecrate Carlos Muñoz Serrano as the Bishop of Barbastro in 1596. In this ceremony, he was one of the main people assisting.
