Alfonso (or Alonso) de Aragón y Escobar (1417–1495) was a very important person in the history of Aragon, a kingdom in what is now Spain. He was the Duke of Villahermosa and the Count of Ribagorza. He was also a Grand Master of the Order of Calatrava, which was a powerful religious and military group.

Alfonso was the son of John II of Aragon, who was a king. His mother was Leonor de Escobar. He had several brothers and half-brothers, including Ferdinand II of Aragon, who later became a famous king known as "the Catholic."

Alfonso's Important Roles

Alfonso held many important positions during his life. These roles showed his power and influence.

Master of Calatrava

In 1443, Alfonso was chosen to be the Master of the Order of Calatrava. This was a very high position. It meant he was the leader of a group of knight-monks. He held this role for about two years.

Count of Ribagorza

His father, King John II, gave Alfonso the title of Count of Ribagorza. This made him the ruler of a large area called Ribagorza. Later, in 1469, he gave up this title. His first son, Fernando, took over as Count.

Duke of Villahermosa

In 1475, King John II gave Alfonso another important title: Duke of Villahermosa. This was a special reward. The king gave him this title because Alfonso was very loyal and a brave soldier.

Alfonso's Military Actions

Alfonso de Aragón y Escobar was a skilled military leader. He fought in several important wars.

War of the Castilian Succession

He played a big part in the War of the Castilian Succession. This was a conflict over who would be the next ruler of Castile. Alfonso became famous during this war. He helped capture the Catalan castle of Amposta.

Siege of Burgos

In 1475, Alfonso led a group of expert siege engineers. These were people who knew how to attack and capture castles. They helped in the Siege of Burgos. This showed his continued importance in military campaigns.

Family Life

Alfonso de Aragón y Escobar had a family and several children.

Marriage and Children

In 1477, Alfonso married Leonor de Sotomayor from Portugal. Together, they had three children:

  • Fernando de Aragón y de Sotomayor (1478–1481)
  • Alfonso de Aragón y de Sotomayor (1479–1513)
  • María de Aragón y de Sotomayor (born in Zaragoza in 1485, died in Piombino in 1513). She married Roberto II Sanseverino and later Jacopo V Appiani.

Sadly, his oldest son, Fernando, passed away when he was only three years old. Because of this, the title of Duke of Villahermosa went to Alfonso's second son, also named Alfonso. This younger Alfonso inherited the title when he was 16 years old.
