The Duke of Villahermosa (Spanish: Duque de Villahermosa) is a very old and important title in Spain. It's a special honor that passes down in a family. King John II of Aragon created this title in 1476. He gave it to Alfonso de Aragón y Escobar, who was his half-brother. This title also comes with the special rank of Grandee in the Spanish nobility.
The family that holds this title, the Azlor de Aragón family, became very powerful in the mid-1400s. This happened when Pedrola became an important city in the Kingdom of Aragon.
A Grand Family History
The Dukes of Villahermosa owned a beautiful building in Madrid called the Palace of Villahermosa. This palace was their home from the 1700s until the 1900s. It's a famous building located near the Paseo del Prado.

Today, the old palace has a new life. It was updated in the late 1980s and is now home to the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. This museum holds many amazing artworks. The family also had other important homes, like a palace in Zaragoza and a summer house in Zarautz.

Who Were the Dukes of Villahermosa?
The title of Duke of Villahermosa has been passed down through many generations. Here are some of the most notable people who held this important title:
- Alfonso de Aragón y de Escobar (1417–1495): He was the very first Duke of Villahermosa, given the title in 1476. He was also a Count before becoming a Duke.
- Alfonso de Aragón y Sotomayor (1479–1513): He was the 2nd Duke, following his father.
- Ferdinando Sanseverino y de Aragón (1507–1572): He was the 3rd Duke. He faced difficulties and had to leave Spain because of his support for the French Crown.
- Martín de Aragón y de Sarmiento (1525–1581): He became the 4th Duke by a special order from King Charles I.
- Álvaro de Urzáiz y Azlor de Aragón (born 1937): He is the current, 19th Duke of Villahermosa.
