Biography
Alfred Amadu Conteh was born in 1975 in Fort Valley, Georgia. He studied art at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, where he earned his first degree. Later, he received his master's degree from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia.
Alfred's mother is African American, and his father is from Sierra Leone, a country in West Africa. This mix of cultures greatly influences his art. Many of his pieces look at his own identity through his parents' different backgrounds.
Conteh creates both paintings and sculptures. His sculptures are often organic (meaning they look natural) and use symbols to tell stories about the African American experience in the South. He uses many different materials in his art to make people think and encourage positive change.
