Alfred Charles Johnson is an American scientist. He studies tiny parts of living things, like cells and DNA. This field is called molecular biology. He also works for the government. He is currently a top leader at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Before this, he led important research at the National Cancer Institute.
Growing Up and School
Alfred Charles Johnson grew up near Selma, Alabama. He was one of 14 children in his family. He went to high school there.
In 1979, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry. He got this from Albany State University. Later, in 1985, he earned a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences. This advanced degree came from the University of Tennessee.
His Ph.D. research was about how hormones affect genes in a developing rat liver. He did this research at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. After finishing his Ph.D., he joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 1985. He was a special research fellow at that time.
His Career
From 1996 to 2007, Dr. Johnson was a principal investigator at the National Cancer Institute. This means he led his own research team. They worked in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology.
He also held several leadership jobs at the NIH. Since 2004, he was an assistant director in the Office of Intramural Research. Since 2000, he was also the acting director for another office.
In 2006, Dr. Johnson became the director of the NIH Office of Research Services (ORS). In this role, he was in charge of many important programs. These included public safety, security, and support for scientific work. He also managed many other services for people working at the NIH.
In May 2016, Dr. Johnson joined the main leadership team at the NIH. He became the acting deputy director of management. He was officially promoted to NIH deputy director of management on May 28, 2017.
