Alfred E. Osborne Jr. is an American expert in economics and business. He is a senior leader and professor at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. At UCLA, he teaches about global economics and how to manage businesses. He also started and directs a special center that helps people learn how to create their own companies. Mr. Osborne has also been a top leader for a group called National Economic Association, which is for economists. He helps guide a large charity organization called Fidelity Charitable.
Early Life and Education
Alfred Osborne Jr. grew up in the Panama Canal Zone. This is an area in Panama that was once managed by the United States. He moved to the U.S. to attend Stanford University. There, he first studied electrical engineering.
After working as an engineer for a short time, he decided to go back to Stanford. He then focused on economics and business. He earned several advanced degrees, including a master's degree in economics. He also received a master's degree in finance and a PhD in Business Economics in 1974.
His Career in Business and Teaching
Mr. Osborne began his teaching career at the UCLA Anderson School of Management. He started as an assistant professor of economics. He quickly earned "tenure," which means he gained a permanent teaching position.
During his career, he spent short times working at other important places. He was an economic fellow at the Brookings Institution, a research group in Washington, D.C. He also worked at the Securities and Exchange Commission. This government agency helps protect investors. However, most of his professional life has been spent at UCLA Anderson. In 2018, he was appointed as the temporary dean of the Anderson School.
