Alfred L. Edwards (born August 9, 1920 – died January 26, 2007) was an important American economist. He was a respected professor at the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan. He also made history as the first African-American Deputy Assistant Secretary of Agriculture in the United States.

Early Life and Education

Alfred L. Edwards was the only son of Eddie and Kathleen Edwards. He served in the military during World War II. After the war, he went to college. He earned his first degree (a BA) from Livingstone College in 1948. He then got his master's degree (MA) from the University of Michigan in 1949. Later, he earned his PhD from the University of Iowa in 1958.

His Career

Before working for the government, Edwards taught at several universities. These included Southern University, the University of Iowa, Michigan State University, and Howard University.

In 1963, he was chosen for a very important job. He became the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Agriculture. He held this position for ten years, until 1973. In 1969, he received a special award. It was called the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Agriculture. This award recognized his excellent work.

In 1974, he joined the Ross School of Business. This is part of the University of Michigan. He stayed there for the rest of his career. He also led the National Economic Association as its president. For a long time, he was a trustee for Western Michigan University. A trustee helps manage and guide a university.

Important Writings

Alfred L. Edwards also wrote academic papers. These papers shared his research and ideas.

  • One paper he co-wrote was about "Black banks." It looked at how these banks worked.
  • Another paper he wrote was about "Land Reform in Iraq." This paper explored the economic and social effects of changing land ownership in Iraq.

His Legacy

Alfred L. Edwards is remembered in many ways at the Ross School of Business. The yearly conference for Black Business Students is named after him. It is called the Alfred L. Edwards Collegiate Professorship. There is also a special scholarship in his name. This scholarship helps students pay for their education. The National Economic Association also gives an award named after him. This award honors people who have served the organization well.
