Who Was Alfred John Keene?

Alfred John Keene was often called "Jack" by his friends and family. He was a talented artist known for his watercolour paintings.

His Artistic Training

Jack started learning art at the Derby Central School of Art. He studied there for many years, from 1878 until 1895. This training helped him become the skilled artist he was.

The Derby Sketching Club

After his father passed away, Jack and his brother Charles took over their family business. But Jack's passion was art. In 1887, he helped start a group called the Derby Sketching Club. He founded it with other artists like F Booty, William Swindell, George Thompson, Charles Terry, and Frank Timms. This club is still active today, showing how important it was for local artists.

His Art Collection

A man named Alfred E. Goodey was a big fan of Keene's work. He collected many of Keene's paintings, eventually owning 77 of them! In 1936, Goodey generously gave his entire collection of paintings to the Derby Museum. This means many of Alfred John Keene's artworks can still be seen and enjoyed by people today.
