The Derby Sketching Club is a special group for people who love to draw and paint. It meets in Mickleover, a part of Derby, England. This club started way back in 1887. Today, it still offers a fun place for members to be creative. It's also a great way to meet other local people who share a passion for art. Some of the first members included F. Booty, Alfred John Keene, and William Swindell.

How the Derby Sketching Club Started

In 1887, a group of young men had an idea. They met at the County Hotel in Derby. They wanted to create a club where artists could work together. It would be a place to share their drawings and paintings. This is how the Derby Sketching Club began. Their very first art show happened in January 1889. It was held at the Athenaeum Rooms.

Joining Forces: Ladies and Gentlemen Artists

Later, in 1922, another art group formed. It was called the Derby Ladies Art Group. For many years, the two clubs were separate. But in 1951, they held their first joint art show. This was for the Festival of Britain. Finally, in 1966, the two groups decided to merge. They became one big art club.

Art for Everyone: A Special Collection

An important art collector named Alfred E. Goodey loved the work of the Derby Sketching Club members. He collected many of their artworks. In the 1940s, he gave his entire collection to the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. This means that art from the club's history can still be seen by the public today.

What Does the Derby Sketching Club Do Today?

The club is very active. Members often meet for different art sessions. They practice drawing people, painting portraits, and creating still life art. Still life means drawing or painting objects that don't move, like fruit or flowers.

Learning and Exploring Art

The club also invites special guest speakers. These experts give talks and show how they create art. This helps members learn new techniques. There are also weekly chances to sketch at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. Members can also draw at the Derby Museum of Making.

Outdoor Adventures and Exhibitions

During the summer, the club plans fun outings. They go sketching outdoors in beautiful places around Derbyshire. They also take trips to see art shows across the UK. Each year, the club holds a big art exhibition. This show takes place at Markeaton Park Craft Village. Artists can win a special trophy for their work. Members can also show their art on the club's website.

Other Famous Artists from the Club

Over the years, many talented artists have been part of the Derby Sketching Club. Some of these notable members include Ernest Townsend, R. W. Bardill, Harold Gresley, and J. P. Wale.
