Harold Gresley (1892–1967) was a talented British artist. He followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were also painters. Harold was known for his beautiful landscape and portrait paintings. He used both watercolour and oil paints. During the First World War, he served bravely and received a special award. Many of his artworks can be seen at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
Life of Harold Gresley
Harold Gresley was born in Derbyshire, England. He began his art studies at the Derby School of Art. Art was in his family, as his father, Frank Gresley, and grandfather, James Stephen Gresley, were also famous artists.
War Service and Awards
Harold's studies were put on hold when the First World War started. He joined the 1st Battalion The Royal Fusiliers. During the war, he fought in places like the Balkans and France.
In late 1918, Harold showed great bravery in France. For his actions, he was given the Distinguished Conduct Medal. This was a very important British award, second only to the Victoria Cross.
Art Career and Teaching
After the war, Harold continued his art education. He studied in Nottingham with a teacher named Arthur Spooner. Later, he became an art teacher himself at Repton School.
While his family was mostly known for painting landscapes, Harold was also a very skilled portrait painter. He could capture people's likenesses well. Harold lived in Chellaston, a town near Derby, until he passed away in 1967.

Today, you can see many of Harold Gresley's paintings in the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. A kind art collector named Alfred E. Goodey donated 77 of his paintings to the museum.
