Alfred Neumann: A Life in Words
Early Life and Achievements
Alfred Neumann was born on October 15, 1895, in a town called Lautenburg, which was part of Germany at the time. Today, this town is known as Lidzbark and is in Poland.
He became a well-known writer early in his career. In 1926, he won the important Kleist Prize for his writing. This award showed that he was a rising star in the literary world.
One of his famous novels, Der Patriot, was even turned into a play. Later, it became a movie in 1928, directed by Ernst Lubitsch. This film was so popular that it was made again in France in 1938.
Facing Challenges
In 1933, a difficult time began in Germany when Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party came to power. Because Alfred Neumann had Jewish heritage, his writings were banned. This meant his books could not be published or sold in Germany.
At that time, Alfred Neumann was working in Italy. The Nazi party took away all his property in Germany. He stayed in Italy until 1938, when he moved to France to escape the difficult situation. While in France, one of his novels was used as the basis for a French film called La Tragédie impériale (1938).
Life in America
In 1941, Alfred Neumann moved to Los Angeles, a big city in the United States. He became a citizen of the U.S. and lived there until 1949.
During his time in America, he worked as a screenwriter, helping to write movies. Some of the films he worked on include None Shall Escape (1944), Conflict (1945), and The Return of Monte Cristo (1946).
He also created the first successful stage play based on the famous book War and Peace in 1942. This was a big achievement because War and Peace is a very long and complex story.
His Family and Later Years
Alfred Neumann was married twice. His first wife was a dancer from Switzerland. After they divorced, he married the daughter of Georg Müller, who was a publisher. Interestingly, Georg Müller had published Alfred Neumann's very first book of poems.
