Early Life and His Start in Sports
Alfred Schmidt was born in Hageri, Estonia. When he was young, he first trained in long-distance running. This type of running involves covering very long distances.
In 1919, Alfred joined the Estonian Army. While serving in the army, he discovered a new sport: weightlifting. He quickly became very good at it.
Olympic Success and National Titles
Just one year after starting weightlifting, Alfred Schmidt achieved something amazing. He competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium. There, he won a silver medal in the featherweight category. This category was for weightlifters who weighed up to 60 kilograms (about 132 pounds).
In 1922, Alfred continued his success by winning a national title in Estonia. This showed he was one of the best weightlifters in his home country.
Life After Competing
Alfred Schmidt stopped competing in weightlifting in 1923. However, he stayed very involved in sports. He became an official and a referee for weightlifting competitions. This meant he helped make sure the rules were followed.
