Alfred Slote was born in Brooklyn, New York City, on September 11, 1926. He later lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He loved writing stories that captured the imagination of young readers.

In 2012, his baseball book Jake was featured in a special TV documentary series called 30 for 30. In this show, Mr. Slote shared how he wrote his books and even read parts of Jake, calling it his best work. Alfred Slote passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 99.
