Alfredo Galicia Marañon Jr. (born December 21, 1935 – died October 1, 2020) was an important Filipino leader. He was known for serving as the Governor of Negros Occidental, a province in the Philippines. He also worked as the mayor of his hometown, Sagay City, for many years.
Who Was Alfredo Marañon Jr.?
Alfredo Marañon Jr., often called "Freddie" by his friends, was the third child in his family. His parents were Alfredo Espinosa Marañon Sr. and Salvacion Galicia Marañon. He was also the brother of former Governor Joseph G. Marañon. Alfredo Jr. was married to Marilyn Andres Dalisay-Marañon, and they had seven children, including his son, Alfredo "Thirdy" D. Marañon III, who also became a politician.
Before becoming a leader, Alfredo Marañon Jr. had several jobs. He was a farmer, a civil engineer, and an aquaculturist. An aquaculturist is someone who raises fish or other water animals for food.
He studied Civil Engineering at De La Salle University in Manila. He also attended the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod and Sagay Elementary School. Alfredo Marañon Jr. passed away on October 1, 2020, at the age of 84, due to heart problems in a hospital in Bacolod.
Leading the Province: His Political Journey
Alfredo Marañon Jr. started his journey in public service in 1964. He became a municipal councillor in Sagay. A municipal councillor helps make decisions for a town or city. Later, he became the vice mayor and then the mayor of Sagay. His older brother, Joseph G. Marañon, had also been the mayor before him.
On June 30, 2010, Alfredo Marañon Jr. became the Governor of Negros Occidental. As governor, he was the top leader of the entire province. He introduced a special plan called "Negros First!"
What Was the "Negros First!" Plan?
The "Negros First!" plan was a big idea to help Negros Occidental grow. Its main goal was to make the province stronger in farming. This meant making sure there was enough food for everyone and improving how farms produced crops. The plan also aimed to create more jobs for people, especially those who needed them most. Governor Marañon's term as governor ended in 2019.
