Alhambra is a small place in Iberville Parish, Louisiana, United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's managed by the larger Iberville Parish.
What's in a Name? The Story of Alhambra
Alhambra got its name from a grand, red-colored house. This house stood tall and overlooked the mighty Mississippi River. The name "Alhambra" itself comes from an Arabic word that means "red castle."
The Famous Alhambra Sugar Plantation
The beautiful red house was built in 1855 by a man named Christopher Adams. It was part of a large sugar plantation. The property also featured a lovely garden all around the house.
After Christopher Adams passed away, the house was not kept up well. It slowly started to fall apart. In 1917, the old house was finally torn down. During the demolition, workers made an interesting discovery: the roof was made of very thick, solid copper sheets! This showed that the Adams family must have been very rich to afford such expensive materials.
