Alice Clere facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alice Clere (died 1538) was the third daughter of Sir William Boleyn and his wife, Margaret Ormond. Margaret was also known as Butler. Her mother was the daughter and co-heiress of Thomas Butler, 7th Earl of Ormond. This means Alice was the sister of Thomas Boleyn, 1st Earl of Wiltshire. She was also the aunt of King Henry VIII's second Queen, Anne Boleyn.

Life of Alice Clere

Alice married Sir Robert Clere (born around 1453 – died 10 August 1529). He was from Ormesby St. Margaret in Norfolk. This was his second marriage. Sir Robert was the son of Robert Clere and Elizabeth Uvedale.

Working for the Royal Princesses

In 1533, Alice and her sister, Anne Shelton, were given an important job. They were put in charge of the household of Princess Mary, who was King Henry VIII's daughter. Alice also worked as a senior member of Princess Elizabeth's household. Princess Elizabeth was another of the King's daughters. At that time, Princess Elizabeth was living at Hatfield Palace in Hertfordshire.

People believe that Alice Clere was a kinder guardian to Princess Mary than her sister, Anne Shelton. Anne Shelton is thought to have been stricter.

Her Later Years

Alice Clere died on 1 November 1538. She left a will, which is a legal document about what happens to her belongings after she dies. This will was written on 28 October 1538 and officially approved on 23 January 1539. Both Alice and her husband, Sir Robert Clere, were buried at Ormesby St. Margaret.

Her Children

Alice and Sir Robert Clere had several children:

  • Sir John Clere (born around 1511 – died 21 August 1557). He lived in Ormesby St Margaret and Norwich. He married Anne Tyrrell, the daughter of Sir Thomas Tyrrell.
  • Richard Clere
  • Sir Thomas Clere (died 14 April 1545)
  • Edward Clere. He was killed in a battle called the Battle of Pinkie in 1547.
