Alice FitzHugh facts for kids
Lady Alice Fiennes (née Alice FitzHugh) (about 1448 – 10 July 1516) was an important lady who lived a long time ago. She was the oldest daughter of Henry FitzHugh, who was the 5th Baron FitzHugh, and Alice Neville. Alice was born at her family's home, Ravensworth Castle. She married Sir John Fiennes. Alice was a first cousin to Queen Anne Neville and a great-aunt to Queen Catherine Parr. This means she was related to some very important people in English history!
Alice's Family and Important Relatives
Alice was one of ten children. Her brothers and sisters included:
- Anne, who married Francis Lovell, 1st Viscount Lovell.
- Margery, who married Sir Marmaduke Constable.
- Joan, who became a nun.
- Lady Elizabeth Parr, who was the grandmother of Queen Catherine Parr.
- Richard, who became the 6th Baron FitzHugh.
Alice's grandparents on her mother's side were Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury and Lady Alice Montague. Through her grandfather, the Earl of Salisbury, Alice was a niece of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick (who was known as "Warwick, the Kingmaker"). She was also a grandniece of Cecily Neville, Duchess of York, who was the mother of King Edward IV and King Richard III. This shows how connected Alice's family was to the royal family!
Marriage and Children
When Alice was about seventeen years old, she married Sir John Fiennes. Their wedding took place on 19 November 1466 at her home in Ravensworth, England. After she got married, Alice moved to Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex. This castle was about 300 miles (500 km) away from her family and her childhood home.
Alice and Sir John Fiennes had six children together:
- Anne Fiennes, Marchioness of Berkeley (about 1468 – 10 September 1497).
- Thomas Fiennes, 8th Baron Dacre.
- Richard Fiennes (born about 1476).
- Edward Fiennes (born about 1478).
- Roger Fiennes (born about 1480).
- William Fiennes (born about 1483).
