Alice Montacute (born 1407 – died before December 9, 1462) was an important English noblewoman. She became the 5th Countess of Salisbury in her own right in 1428. This means she inherited the title herself, not through her husband. She also held other titles, like Baroness Monthermer and Baroness Montagu. When she married Richard Neville, he became the 5th Earl of Salisbury because of his marriage to her.
Alice Montacute's Family Life
Early Life and Marriage
Alice was born in 1407. She was the only child of Thomas Montagu, 4th Earl of Salisbury, and Eleanor Holland. Her mother, Eleanor, was the daughter of Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent.
In 1420, Alice married Richard Neville. When her father, Thomas Montagu, passed away in 1428, Alice inherited his titles. Because she was now the Countess of Salisbury, her husband Richard also became the Earl of Salisbury. From then on, Alice was known as the Countess of Salisbury.
The family's main home was at Bisham Manor in Berkshire. They also owned a lot of land around Christchurch in Hampshire and Wiltshire.
Alice passed away sometime before December 9, 1462. She was buried in the Montagu family tomb at Bisham Abbey.
