Alice McGill is an American writer and amazing storyteller for children. She writes many books about African American characters and important issues. One of her most famous books is Molly Bannaky. This book tells the story of a young British girl in the 1600s. She became the grandmother of Benjamin Banneker, who was the first black man to publish an almanac (a book with facts and dates). Molly Bannaky won several awards, like the ALA Notable Book award and the 2000 IRA Picture Book Award and the 2000 Jane Addams Award.

Who is Alice McGill?

Alice McGill was born in a small town called Scotland Neck, North Carolina. She went to a school with only four rooms! Her parents were a big influence on her. They both loved to read and tell stories.

She earned a special scholarship to Elizabeth City State Teacher's College. There, she studied to become a teacher. After college, she taught school for many years. Later, she decided to become a full-time storyteller. She now travels all over to share her stories.

Alice McGill has traveled to 41 states in the USA and also to Canada. She has even visited the West Indies and Africa! She collects many different kinds of stories. Her collection includes American, African, and African American folktales and traditions.

She shares these stories in libraries, classrooms, and other places across the country. One of her most famous performances is about the life of Sojourner Truth. Sojourner Truth was a very important person who fought for freedom for enslaved people and for women's rights. Alice McGill's story about Sojourner Truth is based on Truth's own writings.

Alice McGill is married and lives in Columbia, Maryland.
