The Jane Addams Children's Book Award is a special prize given each year to children's books. These books are chosen because they teach important ideas about peace and social equality. This means they help readers understand fairness and how to live together peacefully. The award has been given out every year since 1953.
The award was first given by two groups: the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and the Jane Addams Peace Association. Now, the Jane Addams Peace Association gives the award by itself.

History of the Award
When the Jane Addams Children's Book Award first started, only one book won each year. There were no different groups or "categories" for books.
Changes to Award Categories
In 1993, a new category was added for "Picture Books." This meant two books could win each year: one for younger children (picture books) and one for older children. In 2005, the "Picture Book" category was renamed "Book for Younger Children."
The award ceremony also changed its timing. It used to be in September, to honor Jane Addams' birthday. In 2003, it moved to April, to celebrate the WILPF's birthday.
A Past Controversy
Over the many years of the award, there has been one public discussion about a winning book. In 1970, the award was given to The Cay by Theodore Taylor. This book later received some criticism.
In 1974, the person in charge of the award at that time said that giving the award to The Cay might have been a mistake. Theodore Taylor, the author, felt his book was "a subtle plea for better race relations." He returned the award, saying he did so "by choice, not in anger." Even though The Cay is still on the list of winners, many people believe Taylor's award was taken back. This event is often discussed when people read the book today.
Award Winners and Honorees
From 1953 to 1992, only one book received the award each year. After 1992, the award started to have different categories for books.
Since 1993, the award has been given in two main categories: "Picture Book" (later "Book for Younger Children") and "Book for Older Children." Many amazing books have been recognized for their messages of peace and justice. These books help young readers think about important topics like fairness, understanding, and how to make the world a better place.
