Alice Shaddle Baum (1928 – 2017) was an American artist. She was known for her sculptures and collages. Alice was also one of the artists who helped start the Artemisia Gallery in Chicago.
About Alice Shaddle Baum
Alice Shaddle was born on December 21, 1928, in Hinsdale, Illinois. She loved art and studied it at two famous schools. First, she went to Oberlin College. She earned her art degree there in 1954. Later, she continued her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She received another degree in 1972.
Alice married Don Baum, and they had two children together.
Teaching and Art Groups
Alice Shaddle was a dedicated teacher for many years. She taught at the Hyde Park Art Center for over 50 years! This was from 1955 to 2006. She also taught printmaking and drawing at Roosevelt University in Chicago. This was between 1965 and 1967.
In 1973, Alice became a founding member of the Artemisia Gallery. This was a special art gallery started by women artists. It helped show their work and give them a voice in the art world.
Her Art and Legacy
Alice Shaddle's image is included in a famous poster from 1972. It is called Some Living American Women Artists. This poster was created by Mary Beth Edelson. It celebrates many important women artists.
You can find Alice Shaddle's artwork in major museums. Her pieces are part of the collections at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. They are also at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.
