Alicia Margarita Kirchner Ostoić (born 18 July 1946) is an Argentine politician. She is the older sister of former President Néstor Kirchner. She served in his government as the Minister of Social Development. She continued in this role under President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, her sister-in-law, until 2015.
From 2015 to 2023, Alicia Kirchner was the governor of her home province, Santa Cruz. Since 2023, she has been a National Senator for Santa Cruz. She also held this senator position earlier, from 2005 to 2006.
Her Life and Career
Alicia Kirchner first worked as a teacher and a social worker. She has a PhD in social work, which is a high-level degree. From 1975 to 1983, she worked in social action for her home province of Santa Cruz.
Later, from 1987 to 1990, she was a minister in the city government of Río Gallegos. In this role, she was in charge of important areas like public health, education, culture, and social programs.
Between 1991 and 1995, she served as the provincial minister for social affairs in Santa Cruz. At this time, her brother, Néstor Kirchner, was the governor of the province.
In 1995, she ran for Mayor of Río Gallegos but did not win. After that, she worked as an advisor in the Argentine Senate, helping with education and family matters. She returned to her ministerial role in Santa Cruz from 1997 to 2003.
When her brother, Néstor Kirchner, became President of Argentina in May 2003, he appointed her to his cabinet. She became the Minister of Social Development, a role similar to what she did at the provincial level.
In December 2005, Alicia Kirchner was elected as a senator for Santa Cruz Province. She represented the Front for Victory political group. She took over the senator seat from her sister-in-law, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.
During her time as a senator, she helped pass important laws related to social development. In August 2006, she returned to her role as Minister of Social Development.
In 2015, Alicia Kirchner ran for governor of Santa Cruz Province again. She won the election with many votes, becoming the governor. Former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and her son, Máximo Kirchner, attended Alicia's swearing-in ceremony.
Alicia Kirchner also started a political organization called the National Liberation Current (KOLINA). She founded this group on July 20, 2010.
Governor of Santa Cruz
Alicia Kirchner served two terms as the Governor of Santa Cruz Province, from 2015 to 2023. As governor, she was responsible for leading the provincial government and making decisions for the people of Santa Cruz. Her role involved managing various departments and public services.
