Alikanna, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alikanna is a small place in Jefferson County, Ohio. It is called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and buildings, but it doesn't have its own local government, like a city or a town. Instead, the county government helps manage the area.

History

Alikanna began in 1873. This was when a special factory called an "iron works" was built there. An iron works is a place where people make or shape metal, especially iron. These factories were very important for jobs and industry a long time ago.

Later, a post office was opened in Alikanna in 1889. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. However, the post office did not stay open for long. It was closed just four years later, in 1893.

The name Alikanna is quite interesting. It was created by combining two names: Alexander and Anna. These were the names of two people who were among the first settlers in the area.
