Alington House is a special private home located in Karori, a suburb of Wellington, New Zealand. It is known as a great example of Modern Movement architecture in New Zealand. This style of building was popular in the mid-1900s. It often features simple shapes, new materials, and open spaces.
Who Designed Alington House?
The Alington House was designed by an architect named William Alington. He created this house for his own family. At the time, he was working for the New Zealand Government's Ministry of Works. He designed the house soon after he came back from his travels overseas.
Why is Alington House Special?
Alington House has received important awards for its design. In 2002, it won an Enduring Architecture award from the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Wellington Branch. Later, in 2007, it received a national Enduring Architecture award from the NZIA. These awards celebrate buildings that have stood the test of time and are still considered excellent designs.
The house is also officially recognized as a "Category I" historic place. This means it has "special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value." This classification is given by Heritage New Zealand, which used to be called the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Being a Category I place helps protect the house for future generations.
