The Story of Alioto's Restaurant
Starting Small: A Fish Stand
The story of Alioto's began in 1925. A man named Nunzio Alioto, Sr. started it. He was an immigrant from Sicily, Italy. Nunzio opened a small fish stand. It was at San Francisco's famous Fisherman's Wharf. His stand, called Stall #8, sold fresh fish.
Building a Restaurant
Business at Stall #8 grew very well. In 1932, Nunzio built the first building on the Wharf. He started selling tasty crab and shrimp cocktails. Sadly, Nunzio Alioto, Sr. passed away in 1933.
A Family Business Grows
After Nunzio's death, his wife Rose Alioto took over. Their children helped her run the business. In 1938, they opened a full restaurant. They later made it even bigger. The restaurant was famous for a dish called cioppino. Many people say Alioto's helped make cioppino popular.
Challenges and Royal Visitors
In 1957, a fire sadly destroyed the restaurant. But the Alioto family rebuilt it. They worked hard to bring it back. Years later, in 1995, something special happened. King Harald and Queen Sonja of Norway ate dinner there. This showed how well-known the restaurant was.
The Final Chapter
Alioto's remained a family-run restaurant for many years. In 2013, Nunzio's great-grandson, Matthew Violante, was the general manager. The restaurant closed in March 2020. This was during the COVID-19 pandemic. It never reopened its doors. Its permanent closure was announced in April 2022.
