Alis ferch Gruffudd ab Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan or Alis Wen ("Alice the White") was a Welsh poet. She lived in the 1500s. Alis wrote her poems in the Welsh language. She created several short poems called englynion. These poems were about her own life and her family. She also wrote a longer poem, a cywydd, to help two men become friends again.

About Alis Wen

Alis Wen came from a family of poets. Her father, Gruffudd ab Ieuan ap Llywelyn Fychan, was also a poet. He was sometimes called a "gentleman poet." Alis was born around 1520. Her mother was Sioned ferch Rhisiart ab Hywel. Alis had two sisters, Catrin and Gwen. They were also poets, just like their father and Alis.

Alis wrote poems about her personal life. For example, she wrote about the kind of husband she hoped to marry. She also wrote about her father getting married again when he was older. One of her famous poems was a cywydd. She wrote it to help two men, Dafydd Llwyd Llydan and Grigor y Moch, settle their differences.

Around 1540, Alis married David Lloyd ap Rhys. He was from a place called Vaynol. Alis and David had four children together:

  • John Lloyd, who later became a registrar for the church in St Asaph.
  • Thomas Lloyd, who lived in Vaynol.
  • William Lloyd, who became a rector (a type of priest) in several churches. He was also a canon at St Asaph Cathedral.
  • Edward Lloyd, who worked as a proctor in St Asaph.
