Alison Neilans was sent to prison three times because of her actions to support women's voting rights. In 1908, she was imprisoned twice, each time for one month. In 1909, she was imprisoned for three months. Her third time in prison was after she protested at a local election. She and another suffragette, Alice Chapin, tried to make a point by damaging some ballot papers. They wanted to show how unfair it was that women could not vote. Even though some papers were damaged, all the votes could still be read.

Alison Neilans and Alice Chapin had a trial. Alison later wrote about how they defended their actions. Alice Chapin received a longer prison sentence than Alison, but she was released soon after.

In August 1913, Alison Neilans was a speaker for the Women's Freedom League's "Clyde Coast Campaign." During this campaign, she gave daily talks in towns like Rothesay, Largs, and Dunoon. She continued to speak out and work hard for women's rights.
