All Saints Church is a special building in Burgess Hill, a town in West Sussex, England. It is part of the United Reformed Church, which is a Christian church formed by different groups joining together. This church was built in 1881 and has a unique look.

History of All Saints Church

All Saints Church started as a Congregational church. Congregational churches are Christian churches where each local church manages itself. Before this building, the first Congregational chapel in Burgess Hill was on Grove Road.

Building a New Church

The new church was built to replace the older chapel. It was officially known as Junction Road Church when it was registered. This new building opened its doors in 1881.

Architectural Style and Features

The church building has a Classical style. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek or Roman buildings. It features a large portico, which is a porch with a roof supported by columns. These tall, round columns give the church a grand appearance.

This style was quite unusual for a building constructed in 1881. Most buildings from that time looked different.

Famous Opinions on the Church

A well-known writer named John Betjeman once said that All Saints Church was the only truly good piece of architecture in Burgess Hill. He was famous for his love of old buildings and his poetry.

Changes Over Time

The church has seen some changes since it was built. In 1986, the outside of the building was painted. Later, in 2001, the traditional pews (long benches for people to sit on) inside the church were removed. This might have been to make the space more flexible for different activities.
