About the All Souls Church
The former All Souls Church building stands in the middle of Augusta. You can find it at the corner of Oak and State Streets. It is a two-story building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards. The building sits on a strong granite base.
Building Design and Features
A square tower sticks out from the side facing State Street. This tower has two simple levels. The front of the church on State Street looks very interesting. It has fancy entrances with pointed roofs. One entrance is in the tower, and another is at the north end. There's also a small pointed roof in the middle. Above two tall windows, you can see decorative wooden designs.
The side of the church facing Oak Street has two large windows. These windows also have similar decorative wood trim. This trim goes up to a point in the roof above. At the very top of this point, there is a square carved panel. Another detailed panel is placed at the peak of the roof.
History of the Church Building
The church was built in 1879 for a group called the Unitarian congregation. This group started in 1825. This building was their third home. The church was designed by Thomas Silloway. He was an architect from Newburyport, Massachusetts. One of his most famous works is the Vermont State House.
The All Souls Church is a really good example of Stick style architecture. This building style is not very common in Maine. In 1987, a group called the River Rock congregation bought the building. They used it until 2008. Then, they moved to Chelsea.
