Leading the City of London
Sir Allan Cotton held several important jobs in London's government:
- In 1616, he was chosen as an alderman for the City of London. An alderman was a senior member of the city council, helping to make decisions.
- From 1616 to 1617, he served as a Sheriff of London. Sheriffs were important officials who helped keep law and order and managed elections.
- He also became the leader, or Master, of the Drapers Company during this time.
- In 1625, Sir Allan Cotton was elected the Lord Mayor of London. This was the highest position in the city government, like being the mayor of a very large and important city today.
- After becoming Lord Mayor, he was knighted on June 4, 1626. This meant he was given the title "Sir" by the King, recognizing his service.
