A Look Back: History

How Allen's Grove Started

The story of Allen's Grove began in May 1845. A man named Philip Allen, who was a veteran from the Revolutionary War, moved here. He came with his children: Philip Jr., Harvey, Sidney, Pliny, Asa Keyes, and Persis.

The Allen Family's Journey

Sixty-five members of the Allen family traveled a long way from New York. They used different ways to get here, like canal boats, steamboats, and even walking overland from Kenosha. They were very prepared! They brought materials to build four houses. They even brought carpenters to help build them.

Building a Community

The Allen family also brought a minister, Bibles, and hymnals. This shows how important their faith was to them. In 1845, they started the Congregational church in Allen's Grove. They also cared about education. In 1856, they set up a special school. This school helped students get ready to attend Beloit College.

First Postmaster

Philip Allen Jr. became the first postmaster in Allen's Grove in 1846. A postmaster is in charge of the local post office. Philip Allen Sr. is buried in Mt. Philip Cemetery, which is located west of the community.
