Allen's Cider Mill is a very old building in Granby, Connecticut. It's known for making cider, a popular apple drink. This mill has been around since 1783. When it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, it was one of the few working cider mills left in Connecticut. Today, the mill is no longer in use.

Exploring Allen's Cider Mill

Allen's Cider Mill is located in North Granby. You can find it on Mountain Road. It's a wooden building with two and a half stories. The mill has a pointed roof.

The outside of the building uses vertical wooden boards. There are three openings on the front. Two of these are doors. The other openings are square windows.

Inside the Mill

Inside, you can still see machines used for making cider. These machines are from the mid-1900s. There are also hints of older equipment. One example is a conveyor belt. This belt was used to move apples into the mill.

The attic space shows signs of plaster. This means it was once a finished room. It was likely used to store cider as it aged.

A Look Back: Mill History

The land where Allen's Cider Mill stands has a long history. People have been making cider here since at least 1783. That's when Silas Cossitt opened a mill nearby.

This area was once a big center for making cider brandy. Silas Cossitt's mill worked until about 1857.

Changes Over Time

The main part of the current mill building might have been Silas Cossitt's 18th-century house. In the 1860s, this building became an almshouse. This was a place for people in town who needed help.

The building was first located at a road crossing. Later, in the 1870s, it was moved a short distance. It was then changed into a dance hall. A few years after that, it moved to its current spot. It became a meeting place for the local Grange chapter. Finally, in 1899, it was turned into a cider mill.
