Early Life
Allen Lyday was born in Wichita, Kansas, on September 16, 1960. When he was in high school at Wichita South High School, he played football. He also enjoyed wrestling.
College Football
Allen started his college journey at Texas Southern University. He played as a punter there. Later, he moved to the University of Nebraska. He joined the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team. He played for them from 1980 to 1982. He earned a "letter" in football for two years (1981 and 1982). A letterman is an athlete who has played well enough to earn a special award, often a letter from their school.
Professional Career
Allen Lyday was not chosen in the 1983 NFL draft. This means no NFL team picked him during the yearly player selection event. However, the Kansas City Chiefs signed him on April 28, 1983. He was released by the Chiefs later that year on August 29, 1983.
Houston Oilers (1984-1987)
The Houston Oilers signed Allen Lyday on April 6, 1984. He was released in August but rejoined the team in October. He played in four games for the Oilers during the 1984 season. In one of those games, he made an interception. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player. He was later placed on "injured reserve" in November 1984. This means he couldn't play due to an injury.
He was released again in September 1985 but re-signed later that month. In the 1985 season, Allen played in 13 games. He had one kick return for six yards. He also had one fumble and one fumble recovery. A fumble recovery is when a player picks up a ball that an opponent has dropped.
In 1986, he played in the first four games. Then, he was placed on injured reserve again in October. He returned to play in the final eight games of the season. During this time, he made three more interceptions.
Allen played in seven games for the Oilers in 1987. He was placed on injured reserve one last time in November 1987. After the 1987 season, he became a free agent. This means he was free to sign with any team.
