History of Allen & Overy
Allen & Overy was started in London, England, on January 1, 1930. It was founded by two lawyers, George Allen and Thomas Overy. Their main goal was to create a law firm that focused on helping businesses.
The firm became well-known because George Allen advised King Edward VIII during a difficult time in 1936. By the time World War II began in 1939, Allen & Overy was already a leading law firm in London.
As the years passed, Allen & Overy grew internationally. By 1996, clients from outside the UK brought in more money for the firm than UK clients. By 1998, two-thirds of their earnings came from international clients. In 2000, Allen & Overy joined with parts of another law firm, Loeff Claeys Verbeke, in cities like Amsterdam and Brussels. This helped them expand even more in Europe.
